Cashless Tipping for Hotel Housekeeping: Fixing the Invisible Role
The guest never meets housekeeping, so there is no moment to hand over a note — and now no note to hand over. In-room cards fix the timing problem entirely.

Every hotel role lost tip income when guests stopped carrying cash. Housekeeping lost the most, because it was the only role whose entire tipping mechanism depended on a physical note left in a physical room.
Why housekeeping is different
Concierge, valet and bell staff all have a handover moment. There is a second where the guest is face to face with the person who helped them and can act. Housekeeping has none: the room is serviced while the guest is out, and the two never meet.
That means the guest has to remember, in advance, to have cash, and then remember to leave it. Both halves of that now fail routinely.
What to place in the room
- A desk card with the department page — the default, and the least intrusive
- A pillow card on turndown, for properties that already run turndown service
- A line in the in-room compendium or on the TV welcome screen
- A card at the door for extended-stay and serviced apartments
Pooled distribution
Almost every property runs housekeeping tips as a pool. The guest cannot know which attendant serviced the room on which day, and rotating rosters make per-person attribution unfair rather than fair.
Practically, that means one page per property or per floor block, settling to the property, with distribution handled on the payroll cycle under a written policy. Front-of-house departments can run direct pages on the same account.
