Why cash tipping stopped working in the UAE
The UAE is one of the fastest cashless-adopting markets in the region. Guests pay for a AED 400 dinner by phone, then have nothing left in their pocket for the person who served it. The intention to tip is still there; the mechanism disappeared.
The workarounds most venues try — adding a service line to the bill, keeping a jar at the till, asking the guest to add it to the card payment — all put the venue between the guest and the staff member. Digital tipping removes that step entirely.
- No cash on hand is the single most cited reason guests skip a tip
- Service charges on the bill rarely reach the individual who earned them
- Staff have no record of what they were tipped, and no way to show it
